Description: Joanina Wine Shop

Restaurant Joanina, a Huntington mainstay, has long had a commitment to Italian wines from small producers. The happy result has been customers who invariably flag down the waiter and say "We love this wine. Where can we buy it?" whereupon the waiter would ---- Amy and Terasa (large)dutifully direct the customer to some wine shop in Brooklyn or East Hampton.

That's what led Joanina's owner, Robert Oliva, to open a wine store in 2008. Originally around the corner from the restaurant, the shop moved in January to its current quarters right next door, in the space previously occupied by the late, lamented Renaissance Deli. It's been done up with lots of Old World charm with antique chests, cabinets and barrels - and a big picture window that looks into the restaurant's bar.

The store is run by Robert's wife, Amy Oliva, and his partner in the shop, Teresa De Girolamo, a native of Campania, Italy. It stocks virtually every wine on the restaurant's 70-bottle wine list, plus about 100 more. Wines start at $10 and go up from there, though most are under $20. As with the restaurant, the focus is on small Italian producers, and the staff is always poised to educate.

"Our bestselling red is a $12 Colosi Nero D'Avola from Sicily," Amy said. "It's light, smooth and easy to drink. When someone comes in and says, 'I like merlot,' that's what I show them." (Customers looking for a chardonnay are often steered toward the Araldica Gavi, $14, from Piedmont.)

Once a month, the shop hosts a Friday-night wine tasting, from 5 to 10 p.m., featuring six to eight wines that are all available at a 20 percent discount. The next tasting evening is tomorrow, and on offer will be a Cannonau from Sardinia and an Amarone from the Veneto, both of which, said Amy, "would be special treats for Father's Day." -- Erica Marcus
